🎾 Your Rating Is a Number. Your Game Is Much More.

In pickleball, a player's ability is usually reduced to a single number:

3.0. 3.5. 4.0. 4.5.

But what does that number actually measure? 🤔

Traditionally, ratings are largely built around match results. And while winning matters, we at Dinkmate don't believe that match results alone are enough to determine a player's true level.

A scoreboard tells us what happened.

It doesn't necessarily tell us how it happened.

Two players can lose 11–9 and have completely different performances. One might have excellent movement, positioning and shot quality but make a few critical mistakes. The other might struggle throughout the entire match.

So why should they be understood in exactly the same way?

🧠 A different approach to player ratings

This is where Dinkmate is trying to change the way player level is determined.

Instead of looking primarily at the outcome, we analyze the performance itself.

Using computer vision and AI, Dinkmate can analyze hundreds of elements of a player's game, including:

🏃 Movement and positioning 🎯 Shot selection and consistency 🏓 Ball characteristics 📐 Court coverage 🧩 Tactical patterns 🔄 Rally behavior 📊 And many other performance indicators

The goal is to understand how a player actually plays, not simply whether they won or lost.

🤖 AI shouldn't just be added to an old rating model

There is an important distinction here.

Adding AI to an existing rating system isn't necessarily the same as building a rating system around AI.

If the underlying rating philosophy remains primarily based on match results, AI can provide additional information without fundamentally changing what the rating represents.

At Dinkmate, we are approaching the problem from a different direction.

We are asking:

What would a player rating look like if we designed it around actual performance from the beginning?

Match results can still provide useful context.

But we don't believe they should be the foundation of the entire picture.

🔍 From “Who did you beat?” to “How do you actually play?”

A player's level should tell us more than their history of wins and losses.

It should help us understand their movement, consistency, shot quality, positioning, decision-making and overall performance.

And that creates something much more valuable than a number.

It creates player intelligence.

Instead of simply asking:

“What is this player's rating?”

we can start asking:

“Why are they at this level?”

And even more importantly:

“What do they need to improve to reach the next one?” 🚀

That is the change we are working toward at Dinkmate.

We don't believe the future of player ratings is simply better calculation of match results.

We believe it is measuring the player themselves.

Results tell us what happened. Performance tells us why. 🎾
